Patricia Wilz, RN, EMT-P

1950-2002

Patricia Wilz, known to her friends as "Patty" was a Paramedic at the telemetry section of the New York City Fire Department's EMS division. For those who are not aware, telemetry is the department that takes calls from EMT's and Paramedics in the field who need additional help or instructions while treating patients.

Patty started her EMS career with the Jamaica Estates Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Bayside, NY in 1982. Soon after joining,  she became a "hardcore" member, rising  quickly to Vice President. A few years after that, she joined the New York City EMS Department, which at the time was separate from the NYC Fire Department. While working as an EMT, she spent her evenings attending Paramedic school. Eventually, she became a self-described "Para-maniac", spending several years as a street medic in the Bronx.

As if that wasn't enough, Patty went to nursing school and became an RN. She then worked at St. Francis Medical Center in Roslyn, NY in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. She also worked part time as a Nurse at the office of Dr. Flavio Crisari, a local Internist.

A devout Catholic, Patty was a regular at the American Martyrs Church in Bayside.

Patty was on duty on the terrible morning of September 11th, 2001 and lost many dear friends.

Unfortunately, in June of 2002 Patty suffered a series of heart attacks and died on June 14th, 2002 in the very same department of the St. Francis Hospital where she worked for many years, treating countless patients.

Patty is survived by her brother, Richard Wilz and his family in Riverdale, NJ. She will always be missed by her family, her fellow rescue workers and the thousands of patients she treated,  for her life was truly devoted to the service of others.
